By 1991, Kevin’s curiosity had grown into a conviction: repairing clubs wasn’t enough — he wanted to design and build putters that reflected his own vision of craftsmanship and performance. The challenge was clear, though: outsourcing the work left him frustrated, as the quality never matched his standards.

In 1993, Kevin and his wife, Sylvie, made a defining decision. Instead of using their savings to buy a first home, they invested everything into purchasing a milling machine. With no formal training and no safety net, Kevin became a self-taught machinist — spending countless nights reading manufacturing books, experimenting, and learning through trial and error.

A few months later, his persistence paid off. From a single billet of steel, Kevin created the Model 9301, the very first precision-milled Kevin Burns putter. More than just a club, it was a symbol of risk, sacrifice, and the belief that passion could be transformed into artistry.

Redefining the Art of the Putter

From the very beginning, Kevin Burns refused to accept “good enough.” His relentless pursuit of improvement kept him at the forefront of golf equipment innovation, pioneering design features that set him apart from other craftsmen.

In 1996, after years of experimentation, Kevin became the first to incorporate a copper insert into a milled putter face and to design a two-piece hosel system. The copper insert was more than a bold aesthetic choice — it was a solution. The black oxide plating process, which heated putters to extreme temperatures, caused case hardening. While this didn’t change the feel of the putter, it altered the sound of impact.

Kevin’s copper insert restored the harmony between sound and feel, giving golfers a softer, more responsive tone at impact while adding a striking visual element. By marrying beauty with performance, Kevin set a new standard for what a putter could be.

Our Big Breakthrough

From Tour Bag to National Spotlight

In February 1996, Kevin Burns Golf had its first major breakthrough at the Nissan Open in Los Angeles. Among the professionals in the field was Craig Stadler, a longtime friend from Kevin’s college days. Before the tournament, Craig misplaced the putter he intended to use. Remembering a Kevin Burns prototype he had been given to test, he quickly sent his caddie to retrieve it.

That week, fate aligned. As Stadler crouched over his final stroke on the 72nd hole at Riviera Country Club, television cameras zoomed in — and for the first time, millions of viewers saw the name Kevin Burns emblazoned across a PGA Tour player’s putter.

Stadler went on to win the event with a Kevin Burns Signature Series 9304, giving the brand its first PGA Tour victory. For Kevin, it was the moment he had been patiently working toward: proof that his craftsmanship could not only compete at the highest level, but win.

The Masters Moment

A Historic Victory with the 9304

The year 1999 marked the biggest breakthrough in Kevin Burns Golf history. Early that year, Kevin once again pushed innovation forward — becoming the first to use tungsten weighting in a putter, a design that rebalanced the head for unmatched feel and precision.

Just a few months later, Kevin Burns putters took center stage at one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments: The Masters at Augusta National. That April, José María Olazábal captured the Green Jacket, while Sergio García earned Low Amateur honors — both trusting a Kevin Burns Signature Series 9304.

The victory was more than a milestone; it was validation. From a garage in Mountain View to the hallowed grounds of Augusta, Kevin Burns Golf had proven that passion, innovation, and relentless craftsmanship could triumph on the game’s biggest stage.

Bridgestone Golf Japan

Taking Innovation Global

By the early 2000s, Kevin Burns Golf had firmly established itself as a respected name in putter design. In 2001, Kevin partnered with Bridgestone Golf Japan, one of the most influential golf brands in Asia, to bring his craftsmanship to an international stage.

Through this collaboration, Kevin developed the renowned TourStage line of putters, blending his precision milling with Bridgestone’s global reach. Over the course of their partnership, more than 40,000 putters were produced — a testament to both the demand for Kevin’s designs and the quality that defined them.

By 2004, after several successful years, Kevin decided to close this chapter and move on to new projects. The Bridgestone era marked not only international growth but also reinforced Kevin Burns Golf as a boutique brand capable of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the industry’s giants.

The “Kustomized Series”

Reinventing the Fitting Experience

Between 2005 and 2015, Kevin devoted himself to research and development, determined to redefine what true customization meant in golf. Out of this decade of work came the “Kustomized Series” — a business model built on innovation and personalization.

Central to the series was Kevin’s revolutionary biometric fitting machine, featuring a state-of-the-art fitting arm that captured exact length, lie, loft, and head weight specifications. This system gave golfers a Tour-level fitting experience, ensuring that each putter was engineered to match their unique body, setup, and stroke.

The “Customized Series”

Modularity Without Compromise

Kevin Burns first experimented with two-piece putter construction in 1996, designing the SS-2 and SS-4 models for a client in Singapore. At the time, he didn’t fully realize the long-term potential of this concept — the ability to create truly interchangeable components, each milled to exact specifications for neck style, loft, lie angle, and even weight.

Nearly two decades later, that early idea came full circle. From 2015 to 2017, Kevin perfected the technology and launched the “Customized Series.” Unlike anything else on the market, the two-piece design allowed golfers to evolve their putter as their game changed — swapping necks, adjusting lie and loft, or altering head weight without ever bending or compromising the integrity of the putter.

Each piece was milled with such precision that the fit was seamless, giving golfers a fully customizable experience that set a new standard in the industry. The Customized Series wasn’t just an innovation — it was the culmination of years of vision, persistence, and craftsmanship.

Over 35 Years of Family-Driven Craftsmanship

For more than 35 years, Kevin Burns Golf has stayed true to the vision that began in a Mountain View garage in 1989: to design and build the finest precision-milled putters in the world.

Since 2017, Kevin’s son, Brendan, has joined in carrying that legacy forward, ensuring the company remains one of the few successful family-run brands in golf. In that time, KB Golf has reintroduced beloved classics like the 9305 Long Neck and 9320, while also releasing new models each year to push performance even further. Our putters are trusted across major tours worldwide, continuing to prove themselves at the highest level of the game.

In October 2025, KB Golf proudly relocated its headquarters from the San Francisco Bay Area to Scottsdale, Arizona, marking the next chapter in our journey. Yet through every change, our mission has remained the same: to stay family-oriented at our core and to relentlessly pursue the art of crafting the highest-quality putters on the market.
