Looks:
Sometimes classic putter shapes are not easy to master, but as soon as I took the 9306 2.0 out of the box I knew they nailed it. The proportions are perfect for the more squared-off shape of the 9306 2.0. The toe-to-heel length works perfectly with the slightly wider body. I have had the pleasure of using and owning a lot of high-end putters and I can say this might be the best milling work I have seen. The rounded edges are actually milled, not polished, and you can feel the milling lines if you run your fingernail over them. To my eye they look they should be traditionally polished. The topline is thick, but not too thick, while the shoulders and bumpers on the back flow together nicely. I opted for the single site line on the flange and it suits my eye well. The Pyramid Groove face is something to see and you can see why it takes about 30-60min just to mill the face of the putter. Kevin sweats every tiny detail. On the sole you will notice the tungsten weights are different sizes. This is to ensure that the balance of the putter is perfect and the sweet spot is in the dead center. Even the interchangeable hosel fits with precision into the head and has the same fine milling detail that the rest of the putter does.
Sound & Feel
I took one putt and stepped back to shake my head. Soft. The 9306 2.0 with the Pyramid Grooves offer an extremely soft feel even with a firmer ball like the Titleist ProV1x. But while some soft putters lose their responsiveness, this putter does not. Center strikes are met with a soft and solid feel while your ears get to hear more of a heavier knock compared to the usual click. You might read “knock” and think that is a negative description but it is the exact opposite. Off-center shots give you a slightly firmer feel, but zero harsh additional vibration. Your hands will just get a firmer feel while your ears will get a solid knock that is just a decibel or two higher. The only shot I could even consider not great feeling was very low on the face. I hit a couple there that were firmer feeling and gave off a little click. Even long putts across the green stay muted and soft, letting you swing freely without worrying about the noise or feel. You would also think that with a multi-piece head and hosel design, you might get some weird noises or vibrations but it is as solid as a 1-piece milled head. It took Burns a lot of time to design that correctly to ensure the look and feel were perfect.
Performance
Raving about the impeccable milling and the soft feel is great, but does the putter work on the green? For me it has been a very, very consistent putter on the green. I got to speak with Kevin about the putter and the fit for my game and body type. He was a little concerned with my specs but I have to say that the putter sets up perfect for me. I went with my usual 33″ length, 1* flat, and standard loft for the build and the putter sets up great. Zero manipulation or anything for the putter to sit flat and square. The first few putts I felt like the speed was a little slower but I had been using putters with grooved faces for increased forward roll and to me those do roll faster. After I realized I could be a little more aggressive with the 93.06 2.0 on the green I really started rolling it well. Alignment was easy as I tend to do well with single site lines and the boxier shape. I do have to say that the Pyramid Groove face does produce extremely consistent results when it comes to speed and roll. The ball tumbles forward easily with only a touch of hop and skip. Distance is very easy to judge and after that initial practice green session, I never had a problem with dialing in the speed. Forgiveness was pretty solid and the ball stayed online well when you hit it off the heel or toe. Those mishits did produce a small amount of distance drop-off, but it was less than I expected with a traditional blade like this.
Final Thought
I can’t really say enough good things about the Kevin Burns 9306 2.0 putter. From the amazing attention to detail with the milling to the great shaping and proportions you will be impressed with the looks. Kevin’s Pyramid Grooves provide a soft feel and muted sound while producing great rolling putts that you can predict with great accuracy.
